State Medical Assistance Team
Buncombe County SMAT III
A State Medical Assistance Team (SMAT III) is an EMS or Fire Department based team that is designed to be the first line of response in support of local agencies in the event of a decontamination event or mass medical care event. There are currently thirty SMAT III teams across the State.
Mission
- Provide a first line of defense locally, assist at hospitals, or respond regionally or statewide at the request of the North Carolina Department of Emergency Management.
- Provide local decontamination/medical treatment teams that can rapidly assist/start decontamination operations on victims of chemical exposures or other incidents that would require decontamination.
Membership
- Buncombe County EMS is the lead agency for the SMAT; however other county fire and EMS agencies support the mission as well. Members must be affiliated with a county emergency service agency.

Basic SMAT Training
- This class is required for anyone interested in joining the Buncombe County SMAT. Basics of team and personal protective equipment as well as deployment practices are covered.
- November 4, 2009 from 0900 to 1700
- The training will take place at the Emergency Management Garage on Erwin Hills Road.

Fall Required Operational Training
- Again we will be offering 3 sessions for our yearly required operational training. Please plan now to attend one of these sessions.
- October 12 from 0900 to 1700
- October 19 & 20 from 1800 to 2200 each night
- October 26 from 0900 to 1700
- The training will take place at the Emergency Management Garage on Erwin Hills Road.
